South Asia, also known as Southern Asia, is the southern region of the Asian continent, which comprises the sub-Himalayan countries and, for some authorities (see below), also includes the adjoining countries on the west and the east. Topographically, it is dominated by the Indian Plate, which rises above sea level as the Indian subcontinent south of the Himalayas and the Hindu Kush.

South Asia is surrounded (clockwise, from west to east) by Western Asia, Central Asia, Eastern Asia, Southeastern Asia and the Indian ocean.

South Asia typically consists of Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, the Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Some definitions may also include Afghanistan, Burma, Tibet, and the British Indian Ocean Territories. Iran is also included in the UN subregion of "Southern Asia," although many sources consider Iran as being part of West Asia.. Various universities' departments of South Asian Studies also, by and large, reject the idea that Iran is part of South Asia (see below).

South Asia is home to well over one fifth of the world's population, making it both the most populous and most densely populated geographical region in the world. The region has often seen conflicts and political instability, including wars between the region's two nuclear-armed states, Pakistan and India. South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation is an economic cooperation organization in the region.

What's the best way to teach my South Asian kids in USA about their culture/background in a fun, engaging way?
Q. I am interested to find out your views on what the best way would be to help our Indian/South Asian kids (living outside South Asia) understand and appreciate their cultural heritage in a FUN and engaging manner. What would it look like, how often should they do it? What aspects - e.g. customs, food, festivals, history, literature, religion?

A. As a 1st generation American with parents with India, I found that "teaching" about culture wasn't as helpful as experiencing it. My parents sought to have us participate in as many culturally based activities as we could-- from eating and learning to cook traditional Gujrati food at home to doing dandia raas and garba during the Diwali to wearing traditional clothes and jewelry when appropriate. They told us bedtime stories that were based in Indian culture (Ramayana, etc) and on their own experiences growing up. My experience growing up leads me to suggest that the best way to teach your children about their culture and background is to integrate it as much as possible into their daily lives and make it experience-based, not lecture… [cont.]
