Syria (Arabic: سورية sūriyya or سوريا sūryā), officially the Syrian Arab Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية العربية السورية), is a country in Western Asia, bordering Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west, Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan to the south, and Israel to the southwest. The name Syria formerly comprised the entire region of the Levant, while the modern state encompasses the site of several ancient kingdoms and empires, including the Eblan civilization of the third millennium BC. In the Islamic era, its capital city, Damascus, was the seat of the Umayyad Empire and a provincial capital of the Mamluk Empire. Damascus is widely regarded as one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Modern Syria was created as a French mandate and attained independence in April 1946, as a parliamentary republic. The post-independence period was rocky, and a large number of military coups and coup attempts shook the country in the period 1949-1970. Syria has been under Emergency Law since 1962, effectively suspending most constitutional protections for citizens, and its system of government is considered non-democratic. The country has been governed by the Baath Party since 1963, although actual power is concentrated to the presidency and a narrow grouping of military and political strongmen. Syria's current president is Bashar al-Assad, who won a referendum on extending his presidency for second term, garnering 97.62 percent of votes in 2007 and is the son of Hafez al-Assad, who held office from 1970 until his death in 2000. Syria has played a major regional role, particularly through its central role in the Arab conflict with Israel, which since 1967 has been in possession of the Golan Heights, and by active involvement in Lebanese and Palestinian affairs. The population is mainly Sunni Muslim, but with significant Alawite, Shia, Christian and Druze minorities. Since the 1960s, Alawite military officers have tended to dominate the country's politics. Ethnically, some 80% of the population is Arab, and the state is ruled by the Baath Party according to Arab nationalist principles, while approximately 20% belong to the Kurdish, Armenian, Assyrian, Turkmen, and Circassians minorities. Asked by Kurogane - Sat Oct 13 15:06:38 2007 - - 11 Answers - 0 Comments A. Forget the cage all together and put him or her in a 10 gal tank. My hammy is in a tank and its the best thing ever. Honestly it keeps the bedding inside, and the smell although if you clean the cage often it won't smell bad, just like a hammy. The smaller the hamster the more you can keep, but I believe Syrians do well on their own. A tank is also easier to clean, because it doesn't have bars or levels. Just clean the inside with a sponge, and vinegar/warm water mixture. Clean the outside ONLY with glass spray for a nice finish and let it dry. Put newspaper on the bottom, Aspen or Recyclable bedding on top of that in a modest amount because hammies love to burrow. Put a little shredded newspaper and the accessories, bowl and bottle and… [cont.] Answered by genesis33303 - Sat Oct 13 15:50:04 2007 Are wire cages or aquariums better for Syrian hamsters? Q. Which is the better housing option for a Syrian hamster, a wire cage w plastic bin or glass aquarium? So far, I know that wire cages can spread the litter around, but aquariums can be hard to attach stuff to. Please help me out with this and tell what are the pros and cons of each! Thank you so much. Asked by wickl3 - Sun Sep 2 21:02:34 2007 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. I vote for the bin cage. I've had a wire and aquarium cage before and In my opinion, the bin is the best ;) The Wire cage has good ventilation, however, if you have an pet who likes to chew on things (which covers most to all hamsters and gerbils) they will target and attack the wire cage bars with no mercy. Even if you don't mind the noise, it's not good for the pet because excessive chewing on the bars can misalign teeth and cause health problems that range from the inability to eat, to death, by a tooth puncturing the brain. The Aquarium cage is a fairly good cage if you have a good screen/wired top that fastens securely to the tank. An insecure wired top was my main issue with the Aquarium cage because I had the most escapes from… [cont.] Answered by unknown - Sun Sep 2 23:04:21 2007 Which type of cage should I get for my new syrian hamster?
Q. I'm getting another hamster (syrian) and I was wondering whether to get her a critter-trail cage or a tank. I like the tank because there's lots of room. But they're heavy and hard to clean. I like the critter trail because it's easy to clean and you can attatch stuff to it, but it's kinda small. Asked by alain hugo - Sat Oct 18 18:16:22 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Critter Trail- low quality, overpriced, not practical Tank- low ventilation A wire cage would be your best bet. They have ventilation, and are safe. Make sure the bar spacing isn't very wide, or they'll escape. Also, cover any wire flooring as this can cause bumble foot, an irritation on the bottom of the feet, and injuries. (cover the wire flooring) These cages look boring, but are large and practical, with good airflow. You can decorate the cage with tubes, paper bags, hammocks, nests, anything safe, store-bought or homemade. Remember a solid bottom wheel and a plethora of chew blocks.
