An archetype (pronounced /ˈɑrkɪtaɪp/) is an original model of a person, ideal example, or a prototype upon which others are copied, patterned, or emulated; a symbol universally recognized by all. In psychology, an archetype is a model of a person, personality, or behavior.

In philosophy, archetypes since Plato at least, refer to ideal forms of the perceived or sensible things or types.

In the analysis of personality, the term archetype is often broadly used to refer to

  1. a stereotype—personality type observed multiple times, especially an oversimplification of such a type,
  2. an epitome—personality type exemplified, especially the "greatest" such example, or
  3. a literary term to express details.

Archetype refers to a generic version of a personality. In this sense "mother figure" may be considered an archetype and may be identified in various characters with otherwise distinct (non-generic) personalities.

Archetypes are likewise supposed to have been present in folklore and literature for thousands of years, including prehistoric artwork. The use of archetypes to illuminate personality and literature was advanced by Carl Jung early in the 20th century, who suggested the existence of universal contentless forms that channel experiences and emotions, resulting in recognizable and typical patterns of behavior with certain probable outcomes. Archetypes are cited as important to both ancient mythology and modern narratives, as argued by Joseph Campbell in works such as The Hero With a Thousand Faces.

Other than the earth mother archetype, are there any other nature archetypes?
Q. I am reading a fantasy novel that revolves around nature, and forestry. For my ISU I need three archetypes which represent my novel. I want the earth mother archetype, it works, but I wonder if there is anything else I could use. Any suggestions?

A. Pan, Cernunos, Diana, Artemis, Flora, Fauna, Demeter, Epona, Poseidon, Pele, and many other gods and goddesses. Many are specific to certain areas and areas of nature, you will have to do the research.

What exactly is a mythic archetype?
Q. I am writing a thesis on various aspects of the hero and the villain in the Harry Potter series. Under hero, I have categories such as the hero as the orphan and the hero as the child redeemer, and under villain, dark lord, vampire and so on. Can these be called mythic archetypes or simply archetypes? Which is better?

A. How about calling them fictional archetypes? I can't think, off the top of my head, of any mythical examples of hero as orphan, but I can think of plenty of fictional examples of hero as orphan (Oliver Twist being the one that immediately springs to mind.) Just a thought!

What is an example of the ritual archetype?
Q. The definition for the Ritual is the ceremonies that the initiate experiences, these ceremonies mark his/her right of passage into another state, class, or leve. The importance of ritual rights cannot be overstressed as they provide clear sight posts for characters roles in society as well as our own position in this world. What would some examples from film or movies. This is the only category I just don t understand and I just can t find an example.

A. Look for examples from books by Carl Jung. For example, a madwomen (think of some of the Greek/Roman Goddess characters) is a ritual type archetype of the qualities that a woman may/may not have, a wolf is a ritual archetype of qualities of some women, a vampire can be thought of as being a ritual archetype for an individuals' need to take energy and/or life force from others... Think of all the qualities of human beings and match them w/qualties of animals, Gods (Athena as a warrior, Pan as a Trickster and/or Thief), etc. You're probably making this too difficult.
