From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A ballot is a device (originally a small ball—see blackball) used to record choices made by voters. Each voter uses one ballot, and ballots are not shared. In the simplest elections, a ballot may be a simple scrap of paper on which each voter writes in the name of a candidate, but governmental elections use pre-printed to protect the secrecy of the votes. The voter casts his/her ballot in a box at a polling station. In British English, this is usually called a "ballot paper". The word "ballot" is used for an election process within an organisation (such as a trade union "holding a ballot" of its members). From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License How do I register for an absentee ballot? Q. I live in NC but I'm going to be in college (also in NC, but too far away to come home to vote for the day) for the actual election. I'm already registered to vote and did so in the primary. But how do I register for an absentee ballot? Asked by guzrc60 - Tue Aug 26 17:01:47 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. You do note need to register separately for an absentee ballot as you are already on the rolls. Check with your local board of elections or county clerk to find the procedure for obtaining an absentee ballot. if your community has a web site there should be a link if you search for voting. Answered by Stephen Y - Tue Aug 26 17:15:28 2008 Is there anything in the Constitution that guarantees a secret ballot during elections? Q. I was just wondering if there was anything in the Constitution that guarantees a secret ballot so I can refer to the document, or a law. Especially now during the election I am being asked by many people who I am voting for, and prefer to be quiet. I know in school they taught it, and the voting booths are secret, but I just am not sure if its guaranteed by law. Thanks. Asked by kris76 - Fri Jun 27 19:05:15 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. There's nothing specific in the Constitution that I am aware of. Secret ballot voting is dictated by individual states. The process began in 1884 but it took several years before every state adopted it. Answered by Psycho Magnet - Fri Jun 27 19:11:10 2008 What does "appeal from the ballot to the bullet" mean?
Q. Abraham Lincoln once said: "The ballot is more powerful than the bullet" Which I fully understand. But he also added: "Among free men, there can be no successful appeal from the ballot to the bullet; and those who take such appeal are sure to lose their cause and pay the costs." What does the entire second quote mean? What does "appeal from the ballot to the bullet" mean? Can someone wise explain?
