Boston (pronounced /ˈbɒstən/ (help·info)) is the capital and largest city in Massachusetts, and is one of the oldest cities in the United States. The largest city in New England, Boston is regarded as the unofficial "Capital of New England" for its economic and cultural impact on the entire New England region. Boston city proper had a 2009 estimated population of 645,169, making it the twentieth largest in the country. Boston is also the anchor of a substantially larger metropolitan area called Greater Boston, home to 4.5 million people and the tenth-largest metropolitan area in the country. Greater Boston as a commuting region includes six Massachusetts counties, Essex, Middlesex, Norfolk, Suffolk, Plymouth, and Worcester, all of Rhode Island and parts of New Hampshire; it is home to 7.5 million people, making it the fifth-largest Combined Statistical Area in the United States.

In 1630, Puritan colonists from England founded the city on the Shawmut Peninsula. During the late 18th century, Boston was the location of several major events during the American Revolution, including the Boston Massacre and the Boston Tea Party. Several early battles of the American Revolution, such as the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston, occurred within the city and surrounding areas. Through land reclamation and municipal annexation, Boston has expanded beyond the peninsula. After American independence was attained Boston became a major shipping port and manufacturing center, and its rich history now helps attract 16.3 million visitors annually. The city was the site of several firsts, including America's first public school, Boston Latin School (1635), and the first subway system in the United States.

With many colleges and universities within the city and surrounding area, Boston is a center of higher education and a center for medicine. The city's economy is also based on research, electronics, engineering, finance, and high technology—principally biotechnology. The city has been experiencing gentrification and has one of the highest costs of living in the United States, though it remains high on world livability rankings. Boston has been ranked #1 globally and #1 in North America for innovation for a variety of reasons.

Why is Boston/Massachusetts so paranoid about fire prevention compared to other states?
Q. They have fire alarm boxes everywhere, all gas filling stations are outfitted with suppression systems, red strobes on building faces and seem to have fire stations all over. I've been all over the country (excluding the rest of New England) and never seen them as serious as they are around Waltham and Boston. Did something happen? Are people that paranoid?

A. Boston has much old housing stock, without sprinklers and with all-wood construction. The dominant housing is triple-deckers built 80 or more years ago. The houses are close together, with all sorts of wires overhead including streetcar catenaries. All this makes for a bad fire waiting to happen. Some cities are prone to arson. And if a fire does break out in the old wiring, the trucks can have trouble getting in to safely fight the fire. Fires flash quick enough to injure residents all the time. There have also been several famous fire with loss of life. Just yesterday, there was a fire that injured seven people. Paranoia is just a heightened sense of awareness...

Is Boston a difficult city in which to find a white-collar job for those without a prestigious degree?
Q. I recently received a degree from a state university in the midwest, and I'm thinking about relocating to Boston. However, my concern is this: since there are multiple prestigious schools pumping out graduates in the Boston area, I'm wondering if people like me that went to "average" schools have extra difficulty establishing careers there. Is there any validity to this concern of mine?
Asked by AP - Sat Oct 13 04:28:21 2007 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Yes, there is a certain degree of validity to this concern. Employers look more highly upon those with degrees from prestigious institutions. That is why there is a distinction between missouri state university and harvard university. It's only natural. Now of course it puts you at a disadvantage, especially in a city like Boston, but don't think for a second that you can't easily get a decent job here. You will probably have to move your way up in the company, while some hot shot fresh out of yale might not have to. That is the perk of going to a top school. you will have to work harder to establish yourself. The only drawback to this whole scenario is that Boston is definitely one of the most expensive cities to live in, especially… [cont.]
