The Caribbean is a region consisting of the Caribbean Sea, its islands (most of which enclose the sea), and the surrounding coasts. The region is located southeast of the Gulf of Mexico and Northern America, east of Central America, and to the north of South America.

Situated largely on the Caribbean Plate, the region comprises more than 7,000 islands, islets, reefs, and cays. These islands, called the West Indies, generally form island arcs that delineate the eastern and northern edges of the Caribbean Sea. These islands are called the West Indies because when Christopher Columbus landed here in 1492 he believed that he had reached the Indies (in Asia).

The region consists of the Antilles, divided into the larger Greater Antilles which bound the sea on the north and the Lesser Antilles on the south and east (including the Leeward Antilles), and the Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands, which are in fact in the Atlantic Ocean north of Cuba, not in the Caribbean Sea.

Geo-politically, the West Indies are usually reckoned as a sub-region of North America and are organized into 27 territories including sovereign states, overseas departments, and dependencies. At one time, there was a short-lived country called the Federation of the West Indies composed of ten English-speaking Caribbean territories, all of which were then UK dependencies.

The region takes its name from that of the Carib, an ethnic group present in the Lesser Antilles and parts of adjacent South America at the time of European contact. In the English-speaking world, someone from the Caribbean is usually referred to as a "West Indian," although the phrase "Caribbean person" is sometimes used.

What caribbean island has the most interesting, budding new music scene?
Q. I am interested in visiting an island with potential for good new music from young artists like myself-- what's the best caribbean island to go to for inspiration or to find like-minded individuals who are ambitious with their career yet still have an island mindset? Ideally, a beautiful, safe, peaceful place with rich scenery, but also with a substantial audience, ie large number of people passing through and a good modern city area. Btw half of my family is Jamaican, so I am looking for options outside of there, as I already am familiar with the music happening there... Thank you all in advance, G

A. Appart form Jamaica, the only other real options are: 1) Trinidad and Tobago Has lots of people (bigger cities) Has an interesting blend of music. calypso, soca, chutney, parang, rapso and even the reggae types. There are a few people experimenting as well. Also intersting musical instruments like the steel pan. 3) Barbados This is an intersting place but the music is limited to soca, calypso and reggae. I think Trinidad and Tobago is the better place for you. Google it up an see for yourself.

Does anyone know of a good Caribbean/West Indian cookbook which features traditional recipes?
Q. I'm looking for a cookbok that has recipes like gauva cheese, nankatai, tamarind balls, ras gulla, ras malai, peera, goja, cheese rolls, cheese pie, currant roll, salara, beef patty, etc. Too many so-called caribbean/west indian cookbooks feature tourist type food and not REAL caribbean food. Please help me find a good cookbook. By the way, I have family in Grenada and Trinidad( so I don't mind buying a Trini book if it has what I'm looking for. Thanks.

What is the weather like in December in the Western Caribbean?
Q. We are going on a cruise to the Western Caribbean in late December of 2008. What is the weather like there? Is it warm enough to go swimming and stuff?

A. It's beautiful that time of the year and is plenty warm once you get to the Caribbean. If you are starting out in Florida, you will have perhaps 1&1/2 days of nice, but not real warm weather, then it becomes beautiful. Great time to cruise the caribbean
