Any tips on how to use stage make up to make a Caucasian male appear Asian?
Q. Hi, tonight, our school's production of the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie opens. I've been cast as Bun Foo (I'm Chinese), and my friend, who is Caucasian, has been cast as Ching Ho. We've tried numerous ways to make him appear Asian, mostly with his eyes, but do you have any other suggestions or experience in this area? Any suggestions would help. Thanks!

A. I'm half Chinese so when I want to accentuate my Asian-ness, I do the winged-eyeliner thing along with a little dark eyeshadow just above the "wing." Here's an example of winged eyeliner: You probably won't need it to be that dramatic, but it's something you gotta play with to figure out the right look. Here's an Asian model with winged eyeliner so you can see exactly what's being accentuated: This may not work with guys, but it's worth a try. I know nothing about theater so this may be another horrible suggestion and I apologize in advance, but maybe have your friend try to abstain from any emotion in the eyes. If he can keep that bored, eyes half-closed look, it might come across as that stereotypical stoic Asian man persona...… [cont.]

Is it okay to use hair dye meant for white/Caucasian hair on African American hair?
Q. I just wanted to know does it matter if I use any brand of hair dye on my African American hair or would it be more damaging? The aisles are full of hair dyes with pictures of Caucasian women on them, obviously meant for them. But would it be too damaging for African American hair or should I just stick to hair dye meant for us?

A. If you've had a relaxer (perm) or plan to get one in the near future, then it most likely isn't a good idea to use dye meant for Caucasian hair. The relaxer uses some harsh chemicals, and most hair dyes meant for white people will damage the hair if it's had a relaxer. If you haven't had a relaxer, then you shouldn't have much problem using dye marketed for white people as far as damage to your hair is concerned. However, if you want to go lighter, it might be more difficult just because ethnic hair is so dark to begin with. (and keep in mind that hair color can only lighten the hair a couple shades. If you want to go a lot lighter, you'll need bleach which definitely shouldn't be used on relaxed hair.) but I would say that if you can… [cont.]
