Chinese Taipei is the designated name used by the Republic of China (ROC), commonly known as Taiwan, to participate in some international organizations and almost all sporting events, such as the Olympics and Asian Games. The international community commonly employs the term "Chinese Taipei" due to several considerations arising out of the complexities of the political status of Taiwan and cross-strait relations with the People's Republic of China (PRC).

Why does Little League baseball refer toTaiwan as "Chinese Taipei?"?
Q. I just finished watching the Little League world series, and the team representing Asia Pacific is referred to as Chinese Taipei. Yet many of the families of the players wore red t-shirts with the word "Taiwan" printed across the front, just above their country's flag. I've always know this country as Taiwan. When did this change? Also, do we (USA) have any armed forces stationed on the island?

A. This is a very interesting question. My parents are from Taiwan, and I was born in the US, so know about the politics a little. I actually went to the Asia Pacific / Canada game and can give you some politics that actually happened at the game. Here is a simple answer : The People's Republic of China (PRC) does not recognize Taiwan (officially known as the Republic of China) as a separate country. PRC / mainland China considers Taiwan to be part of their country. The PRC government has encouraged many organizations to refer to to Taiwan as "Chinese Taipei". Here is a quick note. In Taiwan, there are two political parties, blue and green. The blue are the people that want Taiwan to reunite with China and the green want to be a separate… [cont.]

How do Taiwanese feel about their sports teams being referred to as representing "Chinese Taipei"?
Q. ...in international competition. Moreover, I wonder how the athletes themselves feel about this. (I know that "Mr. Ma" has no problem with it.)

A. It is a great shame. This is just one of the many ways the Chinese government forces the international community not to recognize Taiwan as an independent country. There has been several incidents where Taiwanese athletes try to carry the Taiwanese flag to the podium only to have Chinese officials and fans forcibly snatch the flag away before they reach the podium. Taiwanese fans waving the Taiwan flag in the stadium also receive the same barbaric treatment from Chinese fans. The Chinese people have become very arrogant recently, thinking they will become the world's superpower and that the rest of the world is envious of them. This is just Chinese propaganda. They don't realize that the rest of the world is only wanting to make… [cont.]
