Denmark (pronounced /ˈdɛnmɑrk/ ( listen); Danish: Danmark, pronounced [ˈd̥ænmɑɡ̊], archaic: [ˈd̥anmɑːɡ̊]) is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe and the senior member of the Kingdom of Denmark. It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. Denmark borders both the Baltic and the North Sea. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea; before the digging of the Kiel Canal water passage to the Baltic was possible only through the three channels known as the "Danish straits". Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Denmark has a state-level government and local governments in 98 municipalities. Denmark has been a member of the European Union since 1973, although it has not joined the Eurozone. Denmark is a founding member of NATO and the OECD. Denmark is also a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). As an OSCE participating State, Denmark's international commitments are subject to monitoring under the mandate of the U.S. Helsinki Commission. Denmark, with a mixed market capitalist economy and a large welfare state, ranks as having the world's highest level of income equality. Denmark has the best business climate in the world, according to the U.S. business magazine Forbes. From 2006 to 2008, surveys ranked Denmark as "the happiest place in the world", based on standards of health, welfare, and education. The 2009 Global Peace Index survey ranks Denmark as the second most peaceful country in the world, after New Zealand. In 2008, Denmark was ranked as being the least corrupt country in the world according to the Corruption Perceptions Index, sharing a top position with Sweden and New Zealand. The national language, Danish, is close to Swedish and Norwegian, with which it shares strong cultural and historical ties. 82% of the inhabitants of Denmark and 90.3% of the ethnic Danes are members of the Lutheran state church. As of 2009, 526,000 persons (9.5% of the Danish population) were either immigrants or descendants of recent immigrants. Most of these (54%) have their origins in Scandinavia or elsewhere in Europe, while the remainder originate mainly from a wide range of Asian countries. From Wikipedia under the

Answered by xoni_xoni - Tue Feb 17 13:04:50 2009 Civil Engineer in Denmark/Danmark? Q. I'm currently studing for my bachelor in civil engineering in the USA. My wife, being Danish, wishes to return someday. My question is whether or not Danmark will recognize my certification, (E.I.T. and/or P.E.) from the United States. Also, will any further schooling be necessary to work as a licensed engineer? I've contacted DTU and Aalborg University via email, but DTU basically blew me off by directing me to the nyidanmark.dk webpage, which obviously doesn't help answering specific questions like this. I haven't heard anything from Aalborg. Any info would be helpful. Mange Tak, Brad Asked by Bradley - Wed Apr 16 22:27:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm not sure what the difference between certification in the USA as a Civil Engineer, and in Denmark -- I would be willing to bet though there is something you'll have to do (as in extra coursework, or some kind of test). Given my experience with academic and professional qualifications between the United States and several Scandinavian countries the two very rarely translate. Scandinavian cultures, in general, are about 5,000 times more bureaucratized and a natural byproduct of that structure are complicated and cumbersome procedures for just about everything. They're a lot more concerned with checking off boxes in a rubric than with if you actually know anything. It might help to contact a few other Engineering programs and see… [cont.] Answered by blursd2 - Thu Apr 17 07:10:07 2008 are more preti finland sweden norway danmark woman or turkey greece spain italy?
