Denmark ( / ˈ d ɛ n m ɑr k /; Danish: Danmark, pronounced [ˈd̥ænmɑɡ̊] ( listen), archaic: [ˈd̥anmɑːɡ̊]), officially the Kingdom of Denmark (Danish: Kongeriget Danmark (help·info)) together with Greenland and the Faroe Islands, is a Scandinavian country in Northern Europe. It is the southernmost of the Nordic countries, southwest of Sweden and south of Norway, and bordered to the south by Germany. Denmark borders both the Baltic and the North Sea. The country consists of a large peninsula, Jutland (Jylland) and many islands, most notably Zealand (Sjælland), Funen (Fyn), Vendsyssel-Thy, Lolland, Falster and Bornholm, as well as hundreds of minor islands often referred to as the Danish Archipelago. Denmark has long controlled the approach to the Baltic Sea; before the digging of the Kiel Canal, water passage to the Baltic Sea was possible only through the three channels known as the "Danish straits". Denmark is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Denmark has a state-level government and local governments in 98 municipalities. Denmark has been a member of the European Union since 1973, although it has not joined the Eurozone. Denmark is a founding member of NATO and the OECD. Denmark is also a member of the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Denmark, with a mixed market capitalist economy and a large welfare state, ranks as having the world's highest level of income equality. Denmark has the best business climate in the world, according to the U.S. business magazine Forbes. From 2006 to 2008, surveys ranked Denmark as "the happiest place in the world", based on standards of health, welfare and education. The 2009 Global Peace Index survey ranks Denmark as the second most peaceful country in the world, after New Zealand. In 2009, Denmark was ranked as one of the least corrupt countries in the world according to the Corruption Perceptions Index, ranking second only to New Zealand. The national language, Danish, is closely related to Swedish and Norwegian, with which it shares strong cultural and historical ties. 82% of the inhabitants of Denmark and 90.3% of the ethnic Danes are members of the Lutheran state church. As of 2010, 548,000 persons (9.9% of the Danish population) were either immigrants or descendants of recent immigrants. Most of these (54%) have their origins in Scandinavia or elsewhere in Europe, while the remainder originate mainly from Middle Eastern and African countries. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License What is the connection between Denmark and all the heart-shapes all over the coins and whatnot there? Q. I see heart-shaped flags and hearts all over Denmark! Why is this? There certainly must be some sort of cultural or historical connection. Asked by Elizabeth M - Thu Jun 21 14:28:30 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. The larger hearts on the coins are mintmarks of the Danish Royal Mint, the facility that produces the coins. The smaller heart along the rim of some older coins is the mark of the Mint Master, while the tiny hearts(9 of them) on the new 10 and 20 krone coins are part of the Danish coat-of-arms for over 800 years. Answered by silverpet - Thu Jun 21 23:12:28 2007 Why does Denmark only have one Winter Olympics medal, all time? Q. This was according to Newsweek. They listed a handful of countries that have exactly one Winter Olympics medallist in their history. The others were unsurprising: small countries that aren't very wintry. But Denmark sits right between two of the countries with double digit medal counts just this year: Germany and Norway. And Norway's population is a little less than Denmark's. So how in the world could Denmark only have one medal, ever? (It was in curling, btw.) The Winter Olympics have been occurring since 1924, and this is the 21st W.O. Because we suck at it :-) I think it's the sport climate in Denmark and how serious sport is regarded , the Danish attitude towards sport is more like "winning isn't everything" so the approach is much more cosy and laid back and not focused on winning. Which also means that a lot of the more serious sportspeople move somewhere else. Anyway we always root for Norway, so as long as they take home the medals we are happy :-) plus we can't really do well in sports like skihop etc. we have no hills in Denmark but we could probably do better in the same sports as the Netherlands which is a flt land too (ice skating, fast skating etc) but there hasn't been much interest so no funding or sponsors. Answered by Lillen - Mon Feb 22 06:48:17 2010 How much would it cost to export a car to Denmark for resale?
Q. My brother-in-law wants me to ship him a new car from the USA to Denmark, anyone know how much import tax, VAT, shipping charges, etc...he would have to pay? Asked by oursjm - Mon May 12 17:20:44 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Hi oursjm It is NOT very smart idea to import a new car to Denmark. Actually some car dealers here EXPORT cars to for example UK, where cars are so much cheaper. The keywords here are taxes and competition: Once someone buy a car in Denmark it is heavily taxed. We pay something like 200 percent extra for a car. This means that car manufacturers have to lower their prices in Denmark in order to keep the prices at a moderate level. So when someone buy a brand new car in Denmark and export it to UK right away they get a refund of the Danish taxes and have to pay British taxes. This results in cheaper luxury cars for Englishmen. (And yes: They DO import and sell cars intended for right side steering in Denmark.
