In mineralogy, diamond (from the ancient Greek ἀδάμας – adámas "unbreakable") is an allotrope of carbon, where the carbon atoms are arranged in a variation of the face-centered cubic crystal structure called a diamond lattice. Diamond is less stable than graphite, but the conversion rate from diamond to graphite is negligible at ambient conditions. Diamond is renowned as a material with superlative physical qualities, most of which originate from the strong covalent bonding between its atoms. In particular, diamond has the highest hardness and thermal conductivity of any bulk material. Those properties determine the major industrial application of diamond in cutting and polishing tools. Diamond has remarkable optical characteristics. Because of its extremely rigid lattice, it can be contaminated by very few types of impurities, such as boron and nitrogen. Combined with wide transparency, this results in the clear, colorless appearance of most natural diamonds. Small amounts of defects or impurities (about one per million of lattice atoms) color diamond blue (boron), yellow (nitrogen), brown (lattice defects), green, purple, pink, orange or red. Diamond also has relatively high optical dispersion, that is ability to disperse light of different colors, which results in its characteristic luster. Excellent optical and mechanical properties, combined with efficient marketing, make diamond the most popular gemstone. Most natural diamonds are formed at high-pressure high-temperature conditions existing at depths of 140 to 190 kilometers (87 to 120 mi) in the Earth mantle. Carbon-containing minerals provide the carbon source, and the growth occurs over periods from 1 billion to 3.3 billion years (25% to 75% of the age of the Earth). Diamonds are brought close to the Earth surface through deep volcanic eruptions by a magma, which cools into igneous rocks known as kimberlites and lamproites. Diamonds can also be produced synthetically in a high-pressure high-temperature process which approximately simulates the conditions in the Earth mantle. An alternative, and completely different growth technique is chemical vapor deposition. Several non-diamond materials, which include cubic zirconia and silicon carbide and are often called diamond simulants, resemble diamond in appearance and many properties. Special gemological techniques have been specially developed to distinguish natural and synthetic diamonds and diamond simulants. From Wikipedia under the

Q. It is a wedding band with a diamond in it... there are no prongs just a hole all the way through the band with the diamond set in the whole... is there some method to remove it or do you have to break the ring to get it out? Asked by IG64 - Mon Jan 28 10:57:21 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. The ring will have to be broken (actually, shattered) to get the stone out. Which may lead to some damage to your diamond, so be prepared, and take it to a reputable jeweler. If anything, take it back to the jeweler you purchased it from - they can return it to the manufacturer Answered by Randi L - Tue Jan 29 18:31:24 2008 What is better in a diamond, the color or the clarity? Q. I am looking to buy a good used diamond. I am wanting to know what makes the diamond look its best. Is it the color, clarity, cut, depth, or what? I am wanting a diamond that sparkles and looks breathtaking. What is the number one most important thing to look for when looking at the quality of a diamond? Asked by anna_sfa - Thu Dec 7 22:09:18 2006 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. All of the 4 C's are important when buying a diamond. Just a note though, depth is related to the cut, not it's own grading. You can't look for just one of them, and forget about the rest. A great color in a poor cut, or a great cut on a poor clarity, or a great clarity with poor color, etc... any combination can result in a diamond that won't be a breathtaking as you want. The best way to get a "perfect" look is to have a good balance of the 3 (Cut, Color, Clarity) in the Carat you can afford. Since you want a pre-owned stone, you should check that the person has a gem report on it, and it should be a current one. The certification will tell you all the information that you need to know about the grading, and also if the diamond has… [cont.] Answered by welches_grape_jelly - Thu Dec 7 22:54:02 2006 What jewelry designer marks engagement rings with a diamond set into the bottom corner of a squared-off band?
