Diego is a Spanish male name derived from the Hebrew Yaʻăqōbh (Jacob), via the name of Saint James the Great (Sant Yago), re-analysed as Santiago and SanDiego. The assimilation of the final t of Sant into the name, a process called reanalysis, is attested in other saints' names, including Spanish and Portuguese Telmo 'Elmo' (< Sant Elmo) and Slovenian Tilen 'Giles' (< Šent Ilen).

The name Diego is popular in the Spanish-speaking world and also in Southern Italy (as are other Spanish names such as Fernando), due to the Spanish influence from the days of the Kingdom of Naples. For example, on the death of King Alfonso I of Naples (also known as Alfonso V of Aragon) in 1458, a famous elegy was composed by one Diego del Castillo.

The patronymic for Diego is Díaz in Castillian (used for example by Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, better known as El Cid) and Dias in Portuguese. Like many patronymics, these have become common surnames in Spanish- and Portuguese-speaking regions. The form Diéguez is much less common; Diegues can be found in Portuguese-speaking countries. de Diego and Diego can also be found as surnames.

What are the best communities for a family to move to in the San Diego area?
Q. My husband and I are considering moving from the DC metro area to San Diego area with our 2 kids. We live in a middle class suburb of DC and would like a similar area in San Diego. We are most interested in areas with good schools (espcially Middle and High school), nice yards (for our 2 dogs), and diversity. Would love any suggestions and reasons you think certain areas are better than others. Also any general thoughts on moving from East coast to West coast and the difference in lifestlyes etc would be great.

A. North County San Diego is a great place for families, Carlsbad and then Encinitas in particular have great school districts. Depending on your line of work, there are many companies in the area, so the commute (a major problem in this area) can be pretty short. Plus they are close to the beach, so no matter what the real estate market is doing, your house will retain its value. San Marcos is also a really growing community, with many new schools, and there are some housing bargains to be found. However, the trade-off is the commute.

What is the driving time from San Diego to LAX on a tuesday afternoon?
Q. I'll be traveling by car from San Diego to LA airport on a tuesday afternoon (sometime between 1-4pm) and am wondering how much time it will take me to get there given the traffic I'll encounter on my way. Please advise.

A. I checked for you on Map Quest. What part of San Diego are you leaving from? And are you only driving up to LAX or are you coming back? It is at least 2-2 1/2 hours to get all the way to the airport from downtown sd. It is the middle of the afternoon, but LA and Orange County freeways always have construction going on somewhere and that always slows things down.
