A fixed-wing aircraft, usually called an aeroplane or airplane, is a heavier-than-air aircraft capable of flight whose lift is generated not by wing motion relative to the aircraft, but by forward motion through the air. The term is used to distinguish fixed-wing aircraft from rotary-wing aircraft and ornithopters in which lift is generated by blades or wings that move relative to the aircraft. Many fixed-wing aircraft are propelled forward by the thrust from propellers or jet engines, but the category includes unpowered aircraft (usually called gliders).

In the United States, Canada and many other regions, the term "airplane" is applied to these aircraft. In Britain and many other regions, the term "aeroplane" is used. The word derives from the Greek αέρας (aéras-) ("air") and -plane. The form "aeroplane" is the older of the two, dating back to the mid-late 19th century. The spelling "airplane" was first recorded in 1907.

Most fixed-wing aircraft are flown by a pilot on-board the aircraft, but some are designed to be remotely or robot controlled.

when an airplane is flying how does the speed increase or decrease?
Q. when an airplane is flying how does the speed increase or decrease? does it work on the newtron's 3rd law?

A. There are a lot of good answers here, Yes - both 1.increasing the throttle and 2. lowering the nose should increase airspeed, but I think your question was subtley asking how low flying affects airspeed. I think what you are alluding to is what is called "ground effect". When an airplane or helicopter is low enough (1/2 to 1 wingspan or less for an airplane or 1/2 rotor diameter for a helicopter), ground effect produces more lift. You are able to have higher acceleration and airspeed as less energy is required for "lift". That is because the hard or liquid surface is pushing back at you, better than a volume of air can. An aircraft's top speed is actually likely to occur at a higher altitude where the air is thinner, but acceleration… [cont.]

Where do I find an airplane propeller?
Q. I am looking to do kind of a cool, contemporary style in my house while incorporating some of my husbands style as well. he is really into airplanes so I thought it would look really cool if I found an old, full size airplane propeller to anchor to my wall. However, I don't even know where to begin finding something like that. Does anyone know of any airplane junkyards or something like that where I could find one?

A. There are 4; Lift Thrust Weight Drag Lift must be larger than weight and thrust must be larger than drag for the airplane to fly. Some physical risks are metal fatigue, weather, pilot error...
