The Canterbury Tales is a collection of stories written in Middle English by Geoffrey Chaucer at the end of the 14th century. The tales (mostly in verse, although some are in prose) are told as part of a story-telling contest by a group of pilgrims as they travel together on a journey from Southwark to the shrine of Saint Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. In a long list of works, including "Troilus and Criseyde", "House of Fame", "Parliament of Fowls", the Canterbury Tales was Chaucer's magnum opus. He uses the tales and the descriptions of the characters to paint an ironic and critical portrait of English society at the time, and particularly of the Church. Structurally, the collection bears the influence of The Decameron, which Chaucer is said to have come across during his first diplomatic mission to Italy in 1372. However, Chaucer peoples his tales with 'sondry folk' rather than Boccaccio's fleeing nobles.

Q. ehh, the book given to me was in old english, and i dont understand it all too well, and there's just 2 questions that I can't manage to answer. what is the whole reason/purpose as to why thepilgrims made their journey to canterbury? & who are the 3 people whom chaucer is most inclined to find fault with? thanks in advance. & Please note that i'm not trying to have you guys write like paragraphs and do my work for me, all i expect is a simple answer like, they went to canterbury because ___. and the 3 are ___, ___, and ___. =)

A. It's in middle English, and you can find online versions that have the original and a translation beside it. They journey to Canterbury because it was a popular site for religious pilgrimages (think of them like medieval vacation spots), because it's the location of the head of the English church and because Thomas Becket was killed there. Three "bad" pilgrims: Friar, Miller, Pardoner (this is my opinion- there are others he would find fault with). One could argue he'd find most fault with wayward religious people, of which there are several, and that he just finds the Miller a brute. I would suggest finding the online translations and reading the prologue, at least.

Can someone help me with the Canterbury Tales?

A. The Canterbury Tales incorporate a range of attitudes toward life and literature, and are by turns satirical, elevated, pious, earthy, bawdy, and comical. They also explore themes of the day such as the pervasiveness of courtly love, the importance of companionship and the corruption of the church. They are a collection of stories (two of them in prose, the rest in verse) or tales, that are told by a group of pilgrims who are on a pilgrimage from Southwark, (an area of modern day central London but a separate Borough / town in the 14th century) to Canterbury to visit the shrine of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. When the group stops at an Inn for the night, the host of the pilgrimage proposes tale-telling to a) pass the time… [cont.]
