How do you do the accounting for fixed assets purchased in a foreign currency?
Q. When a company purchases fixed assets in a foreign currency, do they value the fixed asset back into the USD amount at the date the asset was acquired or what? The asset is being carried on the foreign subsidiary's books at the amount in Japanese yen. I'm a little confused about this. Can someone provide details, or provide a source where I can find good information on this topic? Thanks.

A. You just translate the Yen price to USD cost at time of acquisition and it stays at that cost thereafter. You don't revalue foreign currency non-monetary assets. However you still follow the rest of the standards, like perform the impairment test, etc

Is it right to say that circuit switching uses fixed time division multiplexing?
Q. "Fixed" TDM sounds to be something like where the bandwidth is fully given to the user for a 'fixed' period of time. But it is still multiplexing right? (that is, repeatedly switching multiple inputs to one output) So how can it be used in circuit switching?

A. Circuit switching can be implemented using fixed TDM. However other implementations are possible. According to wikipedia, "In telecommunications, a circuit switching network is one that establishes a fixed bandwidth circuit (or channel) between nodes and terminals before the users may communicate, as if the nodes were physically connected with an electrical circuit. The bit delay is constant during a connection, as opposed to packet switching, where packet queues may cause varying delay. Each circuit cannot be used by other callers until the circuit is released and a new connection is set up. How can I get my computer fixed without risking someone looking at my confidential files?
Q. I have an HP laptop which will not start anymore. I know the problem is not the powercord, but beyond that I don't where the problem lies. I'd like to take it in somewhere to get it fixed, but I'm afraid someone there will snoop into my private confidential files. Any suggestions?

A. It's 100% illegal for a computer repairman to go snooping through client's files. If you find out that they may have gone through them (easiest way is to see when the last time the file was opened is), you can get them in a lot of trouble, and can even bring it all the way to the court system. Don't worry, it's unlikely that they'll go through it.
