France (pronounced /ˈfræns/ ( listen) or /ˈfrɑːns/; French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française, pronounced: [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a country located in Western Europe, with several overseas islands and territories located on other continents. Metropolitan France extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. It is often referred to as L’Hexagone ("The Hexagon") because of the geometric shape of its territory. France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with its main ideals expressed in the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen. Metropolitan France is bordered (clockwise from the north) by Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Monaco, Andorra, and Spain. France's overseas departments and collectivities also share land borders with Brazil and Suriname (bordering French Guiana), and the Netherlands Antilles (bordering Saint-Martin). France is linked to the United Kingdom by the Channel Tunnel, which passes underneath the English Channel. France is the largest country in the European Union and the second largest in Europe. France has been a major power for many centuries with strong economic, cultural, military and political influence. During the 17th and 18th centuries, France colonized much of North America; during the 19th and early 20th centuries, France built the third largest empire of the time, including large portions of North, West and Central Africa, Southeast Asia, and many Pacific islands. France is a developed country and possesses the fifth largest economy by nominal GDP and eighth largest economy by purchasing power parity. It is the most visited country in the world, receiving 82 million foreign tourists annually. France is one of the founding members of the European Union, and has the largest land area of all members. It is also a founding member of the United Nations, and a member of the Francophonie, the G8, NATO, OECD, WTO and the Latin Union. It is one of the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and possesses the largest number of nuclear weapons with active warheads and nuclear power plants in the European Union. How does the climate affect the people who live in France? What kind of crops do they grow and eat? Do many people have heaters or air conditioners in their homes? Asked by Skeena - Sun Feb 22 12:27:55 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. France has quite a varied climate. People in the north like to take holidays in the south because the weather is so much better. People from the whole of France take winter sports holidays in the mountains. People in the South spend much more time outdoors and are seen as being slow and relaxed ! France occupies a large and diverse land mass that produces varied weather patterns. West & North West The Atlantic coast enjoys a temperate maritime climate with mild wet winters and cool summers. The prevailing wind from the west is humid : rain and mist is frequent. Northern France is flat allowing this weather pattern to move further inland. East The landlocked east of France has a continental climate producing hot summers with cold… [cont.] Answered by MPPRH - Wed Feb 25 05:01:34 2009 How much money should i take to France for a 10 day break? Q. The good news is that my accommodation is free as I'm staying with my fiancee's parents, and therefore some of my meals will be paid for, plus I have already paid for the flights. So I only need spending money. I'm going to Carcassone, if that helps. How much do things cost roughly in France for a croissant / coffee for example, and how about visits to vineyards? No doubt the wine will be the biggest expense of our holiday! I was thinking about 300, what does everyone else think?
