A pantheon (from Greek Πάνθειον [1] - pantheion, literally "a temple of all gods", neut. of πανθεῖος - pantheios, "of or common to all gods", from πᾶν - pan, "all" + θεῖος - theios, "of or for the gods", from θεός - theos, "god") is a set of all the gods of a particular polytheistic religion or mythology.

Max Weber's 1922 opus, Economy and Society discusses the link between a pantheon of gods and the development of monotheism.

Pantheon can also refer to a temple or sacred building explicitly dedicated to "all deities", avoiding the difficulty of giving an exhaustive list. The most famous such structure is the Pantheon of Rome, built in the year 27 BC. The building was dedicated to "all gods" as a gesture embracing the religious syncretism in the increasingly multicultural Roman Empire, with subjects worshipping gods from many cultures and traditions. The building was later renovated for use as a Christian church in 609 under Pope Boniface IV.

How did the early followers of the Abrahamic god think of other contemporary gods?
Q. At the time that the early Abrahamic followers worshipped their god, there were very many other, contemporary gods - of other tribes, of the Greeks, etc, etc. What did those early followers think of the other gods? - That they were simply figments of the other tribes' imaginations; not *real* gods at all ("I am the one true god")? - That they were indeed gods, but inferior to the Abrahamic god ("put no other gods before me")? Any ideas?

A. Deuteronomy 32:17 describes the Israelites who fell into idolatry: "They went sacrificing to demons, not to God,gods whom they had not known. New ones who recently came in,with whom your forefathers were not acquainted."

What does it mean to understand Gods thinking when contemplating whether something is good or bad ?
Q. We know the bible has specific laws in it, but what about the other stuff. Do we take into consideration what God felt about something he had recorded the past and apply it in our lives even though its not a specific command. Give example of principles in Gods word, where you got it, and why it there. ( Do not give specific commands, we all should know those) Thanks

A. God made the bible with laws and principles in it. What are principles? A principle is defined as a general or fundamental truth: a comprehensive and fundamental law, doctrine, or assumption on which others are based or from which others are derived. (Webster s Third New International Dictionary) A careful study of the Bible reveals that our heavenly Father provides fundamental directives that cover a variety of situations and aspects of life. He does this with our eternal benefit in view. How do principles differ from laws? Principles provide the basis for laws. Rules, which tend to be specific, may be for some particular time or situation, but principles are timeless. (Psalm 119:111) Divine principles do not become outdated or pass… [cont.]

How do Atheists believe the non existence of so many gods at the same time?
Q. For example, a Christian only has to think of 1 God, a Hindu has to believe in thousands. An Atheist has to believe in the non-existence of all the religions combined! But then again, does that mean a Christian believes in the non existence of all gods minus one?

A. >>But then again, does that mean a Christian believes in >>the non existence of all gods minus one? Well gee, I guess it would. Ditto for other monotheists such as Muslims and Jews. So answer how they manage to do that, and you'll have the answer to your original question.

A god (or goddess) in polytheistic religions is a supernatural being that is worshipped by humans. The gods are immortal.

  • This fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that man-made gods are no gods at all.
  • And now I will try to defend myself against them: these new accusers must also have their affidavit read. What do they say? Something of this sort: - That Socrates is a doer of evil, and corrupter of the youth, and he does not believe in the gods of the state, and has other new divinities of his own.
  • I will obey the god rather than you, and as long as I draw breath and am able, I shall not cease to practice philosophy.
  • Concerning the gods, I have no means of knowing whether they exist or not or of what sort they may be, because of the obscurity of the subject, and the brevity of human life.
