Gold (pronounced /ˈɡoʊld/) is a chemical element with the symbol Au (Latin: aurum, "shining dawn") and an atomic number of 79. It has been a highly sought-after precious metal for coinage, jewelry, and other arts since the beginning of recorded history. The metal occurs as nuggets or grains in rocks, in veins and in alluvial deposits. Gold is dense, soft, shiny and the most malleable and ductile pure metal known. Pure gold has a bright yellow color and luster traditionally considered attractive, which it maintains without oxidizing in air or water. Gold is one of the coinage metals and has served as a symbol of wealth and a store of value throughout history. Gold standards have provided a basis for monetary policies. It also has been linked to a variety of symbolisms and ideologies.

A total of 161,000 tonnes of gold have been mined in human history, as of 2009. Modern industrial uses include dentistry and electronics, where gold has traditionally found use because of its good resistance to oxidative corrosion and excellent quality as a conductor of electricity.

Chemically, gold is a transition metal and can form trivalent and univalent cations in solutions. Compared with other metals, pure gold is chemically least reactive, but it is attacked by aqua regia (a mixture of acids), forming chloroauric acid, but not by the individual acids, and by alkaline solutions of cyanide. Gold dissolves in mercury, forming amalgam alloys, but does not react with it. Gold is insoluble in nitric acid, which dissolves silver and base metals. This property is exploited in the gold refining technique known as "inquartation and parting". Nitric acid has long been used to confirm the presence of gold in items, and this is the origin of the colloquial term "acid test", referring to a gold standard test for genuine value.

What type of gold do you believe compliments an onyx stone best?
Q. Hi, I would like to know your opinions on what type of gold you believe compliments (or matches) a black onyx stone best - Yellow Gold or White Gold? I am purchasing a "class ring" and am still unsure of whether 14k white or yellow goes looks best with the stone. Thanks for your opinions.
Asked by Kevin - Mon Oct 5 20:55:11 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I am a jeweler and My preference is yellow gold, with white gold people will often say " lovely silver ring", but if the silver look is your style then White Gold is best as it is harder wearing and stronger than silver. Rose gold is also OK. Black onyx is complimented by most colors. Don't skimp on the gold. Solid is better than a cheaper hollow ring.

How can i keep a gold fish alive?
Q. I want to have a fish in my room and i hear that gold fish are the easiest to keep alive but i have already killed 2. i dont know what im doing wrong, i change the water once a week and i use the de-chlorine stuff and only feed it twice a day. i gave up for a while but i want one again. i need an expert , is a gold fish the best thing or should i consider a different type. i dont want to deal with aquairiums or anything, just a fish that i can put into a fish bowl.

A. to keep a gold fish alive and healthy you need a tank. If you don't want to deal with a tank, get a betta. Sorry that is how it works. Secondly, watch where you are buying fish. I hate to keep saying but Walmart is not the place to buy fish. Change stores. Although many goldfish live fine in bowls for a while, it really isn't the best place for them. Seriously I would get a beta if you really have to have a bowl. You will be much happier with a beta in a bowl.

What is the cost difference between white and yellow gold crowns?
Q. I just got a white gold crown and wanted a yellow gold crown. The dentist says the difference in cost is about $250. Is that reasonable? I thought white gold was actually more expensive than yellow for most applications.
Asked by Tom - Tue Oct 6 11:48:30 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Probably. Yellow gold crowns have a higher gold content in them. They are not 100% gold by the way. Gold runs labs about $1000/oz right now.
