Italy (pronounced /ˈɪtəli/ ( listen); Italian: Italia [iˈtaːlja]), officially the Italian Republic (Italian: Repubblica italiana), is a country located partly on the European Continent and partly on the Italian Peninsula in Southern Europe and on the two largest islands in the Mediterranean Sea, Sicily and Sardinia. Italy shares its northern, Alpine boundary with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. The independent states of San Marino and the Vatican City are enclaves within the Italian Peninsula, and Campione d'Italia is an Italian exclave in Switzerland. The territory of Italy covers 301,338 km² and is influenced by a temperate seasonal climate. With 60.2 million inhabitants, it is the sixth most populous country in Europe, and the twenty-third most populous in the world. The land known as Italy today has been the cradle of European cultures and peoples, such as the Etruscans and the Romans. Italy's capital, Rome, was for centuries the political centre of Western civilisation, as the capital of the Roman Empire. After its decline, Italy would endure numerous invasions by foreign peoples, from Germanic tribes such as the Lombards and Ostrogoths, to the Normans and later, the Byzantines, among others. Centuries later, Italy would become the birthplace of the Renaissance, an immensely fruitful intellectual movement that would prove to be integral in shaping the subsequent course of European thought. Through much of its post-Roman history, Italy was fragmented into numerous kingdoms and city-states (such as the Kingdom of Sardinia, the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies and the Duchy of Milan), but was unified in 1861, a tumultuous period in history known as the "Risorgimento". In the late 19th century, through World War I, and to World War II, Italy possessed a colonial empire, which extended its rule to Libya, Eritrea, Italian Somaliland, Ethiopia, Albania, Rhodes, the Dodecanese and a concession in Tianjin, China. Modern Italy is a democratic republic. It has been ranked the world's eighteenth most-developed country and its Quality-of-Life Index has been ranked in the top ten in the world. Italy enjoys a very high standard of living, and has a high nominal GDP per capita. It is a founding member of what is now the European Union and North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Italy is also a member of the G8 and G20. It has the world's seventh-largest nominal GDP, tenth highest GDP (PPP) and the fifth highest government budget in the world. It is also a member state of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the World Trade Organization, the Council of Europe, and the Western European Union. Italy has the world's ninth-largest defence budget and shares NATO's nuclear weapons. Italy plays a prominent role in European and global military, cultural and diplomatic affairs, and it is affiliated with worldwide organizations such as the Food and Agriculture Organization, World Food Programme, International Fund for Agricultural Development, Glocal Forum, and the NATO Defence College, which are headquartered in Rome. The country's European political, social and economic influence make it a major regional power, alongside the United Kingdom, France, Germany, and Russia, and Italy has been classified in a study, measuring hard power, as being the eleventh greatest worldwide national power. The country has a high public education level, high labour force, is a globalised nation, and also has 2009's sixth best international reputation. Italy also has the world's nineteenth highest life expectancy, and in 2000 its healthcare system was ranked the second best in the world by the World Health Organization Report. In 2007 it was the world's fifth most visited country, with over 43.7 million international arrivals, and boasts a long tradition in the arts, science and technology, including the world's highest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites to date (44). Q. I'm going to Italy for June 29-July 28 2007 for a summer school in Italy and touring program. Rome is where I'll be. Is there anything specific I should bring? Is there anything at all anyone can tell me about being in Italy? Thanks in advance :) Asked by lilsunshineray08 - Sun Feb 25 10:11:58 2007 - - 7 Answers - 1 Comments A. It will probably be really hot, BUT please note that you cannot wear shorts or sleeveless shirts in a lot of the museums and churches. So pack a lot of skirts and shirts with short sleeves. Answered by Lucky - Sun Feb 25 10:16:09 2007 What would a trip to Italy in November be like? Q. My (rather large) family is planning a trip to Italy, and we are trying to decide the best time to go. We plan to visit Rome, Assisi, Siena, Florence, Verona, and Venice. How is the weather in November? When would you recommend as the best time to visit? Any tips you want to pass along? None of us are exactly world wanderers, so any advice would be appreciated. Thanks! Asked by Raven - Tue Jan 6 06:08:11 2009 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments A. A lot depends on what type of weather you are used to back home. Italy can get quite hot in Summer, but if you're young and/or used to the heat in Summer then it shouldn't be a problem. November is one of the less predictable months particularly the further North you go in Italy. On the other hand it's also a good time to visit as the tourist attractions will be less crowded. In Rome this year we had an excellent November, and a very rainy start to December, so rainy in fact that we had floods! For a better idea about the climate of Rome and Lazio you can visit this page In my opinion the chances are that in November you will have some rainy days but you will have some fine days too. The best time to visit is just before or after… [cont.] Answered by romeoitaly - Tue Jan 6 17:01:42 2009 How dangerous is it to travel to Italy alone?
Q. I'm planning on going to Perugia, Italy on a 5 day break while studying abroad in London. I don't have anyone to go with, I do not know much Italian, I'll be going alone, and I'm a first-timer in Europe. How dangerous is this trip and what safety precautions would you suggest?
