Metropolitan France (French: France métropolitaine or la Métropole, or colloquially l'Hexagone) is the part of France located in Europe, including Corsica. It can also be described as mainland France or as the French mainland and the island of Corsica. By contrast, Overseas France (la France d'outre-mer, or l'Outre-mer, or colloquially les DOM-TOM) is the collective name for the French overseas departments (départements d'outre-mer or DOM), territories (territoires d'outre-mer or TOM), and collectivities (collectivitiés d'outre-mer or COM).

Metropolitan France and overseas France together form what is officially called the French Republic. Metropolitan France accounts for 81.8% of the territory and 95.9% of the population of the French Republic.

The four overseas departments—Martinique, Guadeloupe, Réunion, and French Guiana—have the same political status as metropolitan France's departments. Metropolitan France and these four overseas departments together are sometimes called France entière ("entire France") by the French administration, especially by INSEE, although in reality this France entière does not include the French overseas collectivities and territories which have more autonomy than the overseas departments (read the Origin of the name section below).

In overseas France, a person from metropolitan France is often called a métro, short for métropolitain.

Why do I get tongue tied about speaking a foreign language?
Q. Hi, Je parle francais, hablo espanol, y tha gaidhlig Albannach agam. I speak French, Spanish, and Scottish Gaelic as well as English. However, when I am in a store and asking a question, I become extremely shy about asking in the native language (I live in a large American metropolitan city). I don't know if I am embarrassed that I will sound stupid to them or what, but it is something I have noticed. I don't claim to speak my other languages well, but it is bizarre for me to stand in front of a bunch of people speaking Spanish discussing how to give me directions and understand everything they say but reply in English. The one store I finally broke my shyness in- the lady was shocked and replied in surprise (I am Scottish and Irish… [cont.]

A. I feel the same way. I am used that kind of thing where I understand but never speak up. I think it has to do with the fact that you know for a fact that they have "superiority" over you in the situation. You know their skills must be better. Any situation where you are clearly made to feel inferior make you nervous...when being talked to by parents, police officers, or teachers you might feel that way too...I think the key is to understand that speaking in their language rather than yours is generally a respectful gesture and the fact that you are attempting to speak in their language rather than expecting that they speak yours is a sign of respect. So even if you spoke it horribly, they'd be pleased.

What should I do for my sweet 16, besides have a party?
Q. I'm thinking of having an alternative to having a sweet 16 party and instead do something big. For example, I'm going to apply to spend a summer in France. That is what I'm looking for. Well of course, if I get accepted and my parents let me. But I want to do something big for my sixteenth birthday! Like spend a weekend somewhere else, example a beach or a different city. I live in Northern Virginia, in the DC metropolitan area. So if you're going to say, go on a trip, then give me a place. And don't say like activities I can do any other weekend, examples are going to a mall, laser-tagging, movies, etc. Those are boring. Haha so funny...-_-, answerer #1 Even worse, answerer #2...serious answers please!
