An organization (or organisation — see spelling differences) is a social arrangement which pursues collective goals, which controls its own performance, and which has a boundary separating it from its environment. The word itself is derived from the Greek word ὄργανον (organon [itself derived from the better-known word ἔργον ergon - work; deed - > ergonomics, etc]) meaning tool.

In the social sciences, organizations are studied by researchers from several disciplines, the most common of which are sociology, economics, political science, psychology, management, and organizational communication. The broad area is commonly referred to as organizational studies, organizational behavior or organization analysis. Therefore, a number of different theories and perspectives exist, some of which are compatible, and others that are competing.

  • Organization – process-related: an entity is being (re-)organized (organization as task or action).
  • Organization – functional: organization as a function of how entities like businesses or state authorities are used (organization as a permanent structure).
  • Organization – institutional: an entity is an organization (organization as an actual purposeful structure within a social context)

A. It is a tough thing to do. Some members of our community tried that and it did not work. The different org. did not want to come under the umbrella because of differences in each group's Mission Statement. The umbrella group was attempting to coordinate the donations of time and money to ensure better results. It cause such a rift in the Community that the general consensus was to have each organization send two representatives for discussions on Community problems.

other organizations such as the Peace Corps or AmeriCorps?
Q. I am interested in a year of service after graduating before going on to law school, and I was trying to find an organization that was more hands-on than the two mentioned above. These organizations are more about setting up a poverty network than physically helping people in poverty, from what I have read anyway, and I am interested in something more direct. Any suggestions, tips, advice? Thanks in advance.

What are the largest martial art organizations in the world?
Q. I'm not talking about an organization where you just pay your fees and you can practice any style. I'm thinking more towards organizations like ITF, WTF, Kodokan, Aikikai, etc. Anyone have an official rank or set?

A. Actually the World Karate Federation is one of the largest, if not the largest, in the world. They have an estimated 60 million members worldwide and include sub associations that number in the thousands. ATA is a large association but one of the least respected. WTF is the largest for Tae Kwon Do with about 8 Million world wide but they never update their database to exclude non training members. ISKA is very small in comparison so is NASKA, WUKO, NBL and the other sport associations.
