The Pacific Ocean is the largest of the Earth's oceanic divisions. Its name is derived from the Luso-Latin macaronic Tepre Pacificum, "peaceful sea", bestowed upon it by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. It extends from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south, bounded by Asia and Australia in the west, and the Americas in the east.

At 169.2 million square kilometres (65.3 million square miles) in area, this largest division of the World Ocean – and, in turn, the hydrosphere – covers about 46% of the Earth's water surface and about 30% of its total surface. The equator subdivides it into the North Pacific Ocean and South Pacific Ocean, with two exceptions: the Galápagos and Gilbert Islands, while straddling the equator, are deemed wholly within the South Pacific. The Mariana Trench in the western North Pacific is the deepest point in the Pacific and in the world, reaching a depth of 10,911 metres (35,797 ft).

How long would it take to swim across the Pacific Ocean?
Q. Are their modern suits that can resist the cold water temperature of the Pacific Ocean for many hours? Has anybody been able to do this, for Example swim from the Western US to the coast of China?

A. Wetsuits help ward off the cold, but some consider wearing them cheating because of the buoyancy they provide. The water temperature really isn't the problem with a swim of this magnitude, most veteran open water swimmers can handle temperatures in the 60 - 70 degree range. Fast open water swimmer can swim about 1 mile every 20 -25 minutes. The English Channel record is just under 7 hours and that is about 18 miles long. The problem is keeping this up for long periods of time. It can be done for 8 hours or so, but after that, swimmers start to slow down. Also, there is a problem trying to swim day after day. It would be much better a group of swimmers could attempt something like this, switching off relay style about every 4 hours. [cont.]

A. You aren't going to get an accurate answer from anyone. If the IUCN and WWF don't have a population count or estimate, no one will have one. They do have a lot of other information if you're interested. The Tagging Of Pacific Predators program has tagged 100 great whites, among other predatory species, to try to learn more about their behavior. One thing they've learned so far is that despite being widely traveled, distinct populations never meet. More information:
