Philip is a given name, derived from the Greek Philippos (Φίλιππος), meaning "lover of horses" or "friend of horses". From φίλος (philos) "lover" and ίππος (hippos) "horse". While the literal translation, in Ancient Greece, the ownership of horses was available only to those rich enough to afford them. Since beauty, wealth, and nobility were all synonymous, "lover of horses" can also be translated as "noble". Philip has alternative spellings: Phillip, Philippe, Philipp, Felip, Felipe, Filip, Filippo, Filippu, Filipe, Filype, Phylip, Phillep, Pilib, Fülöp, Fulup, and has the diminutive Phil. Q. I was reading an article titled "Philip Morris Confirms Boosting Cigarette Prices 10c/Pack". I do not understand if a cigarette company lower their promations, they will "effectively" raise prices? Why would it be effectively? And more importantly, what are the promotions, because sadly I don't think I understand their term "promotions" enough because I am not getting the article. Asked by Ray L - Mon Jan 8 23:06:42 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Philip Morris won't be offering as many promotions as before. If they offer a promotion of $1 off a carton of 10 packs that normally costs $20 a carton, you pay $19, or effectively $1.90 per pack. However, if they stop offering the promotion, now you pay the full $20 per carton, or $2 per pack. The cost has effectively risen 10 cents per pack. Answered by Buhlmann - Mon Jan 8 23:58:02 2007 Where can I find online short stories by Philip Roth? Q. I need to compose a synthesis paper on short stories written by Philip Roth. Trouble is, I can't seem to find any, or even the titles. Can anyone refer me to a site where I can find free full-text versions of his short stories? If not, does anyone have a LitFinder login I could use? Asked by The Prophet Ohio - Sat Dec 8 14:02:12 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. For this type of problem I would recommend going to the library and asking the librarian to track them down for you. If the book you need isn't in that library they can request it from another one using the interlibrary loan program. In fact, you can probably do everything over the phone up to the point where you have to pick up the book(s). You might find your library has online access to the database you need, and you can use your own library card number to log in from your home PC. I can use LitFinder from home by going through my library's website and using my library card number.
