The telephone (from the Greek: τῆλε, tēle, "far" and φωνή, phōnē, "voice"), commonly referred to as a phone, is a telecommunications device that transmits and receives sound, most commonly the human voice. Telephones are a point-to-point communication system whose most basic function is to allow two people separated by large distances to talk to one another. It is one of the most common household appliances in the developed world, and has long been considered indispensable to business, industry and government. The word "telephone" has been adapted to many languages and is widely recognized around the world.

All telephones have a microphone to speak into, an earphone which reproduces the voice of the other person, a ringer which makes a sound to alert the owner when a call is coming in, and a keypad (or in older phones a telephone dial) to enter the telephone number of the telephone being called. The microphone and earphone are usually built into a handset which is held up to the face to talk. The keypad may be in the handset or in a separate part. A landline telephone is connected by a wire to the telephone network, while a mobile phone or cell phone is portable and communicates with the telephone network by radio. A cordless telephone has a portable handset which communicates by radio with a base station connected by wire to the telephone network, and can only be used within a limited range of the base station.

The microphone converts the sound waves to electrical signals, which are sent through the telephone network to the other phone, where they are converted back to sound waves by the earphone in the other phone's handset. Telephones are a duplex communications medium, meaning they allow the people on both ends to talk at once. The telephone network, consisting of a worldwide net of telephone lines, fiberoptic cables, microwave transmission, cellular networks, communications satellites, and undersea telephone cables connected by switching centers, allows any telephone in the world to communicate with any other. Each telephone line has an identifying number called its telephone number. In order to initiate a telephone call, a conversation with another telephone, the user enters the other telephone's number into a numeric keypad on his/her phone. Graphic symbols used to designate telephone service or phone-related information in print, signage, and other media include ℡(U+2121), ☎(U+260E), ☏(U+260F), and ✆(U+2706).

What are some phones for Verizon Wireless without a data plan or with a cheap data plan?
Q. I am looking at an HTC Imagio and an ENv Touch, I prefer a touch screen phone. I'm going to be buying a phone off craigslist or ebay because I don't want to sign a new contract. What are some good phones?

A. For the question about the plans, I would go with-Page Plus, which is a Verizon-MNVO Nationwide Talk & Text Unlimited w/ 20 MB of internet-$44.95 a month or 1200 Talk & Text w/ 50 MB of internet for $29.95 a month. Same coverage area as Verizon for a much cheaper price. The HTC and especially the ENV Touch will work just fine with the service. Be aware that any phone you buy off of Craigslist has a clean esn. If you are unsure, get the ESN from the seller and call Verizon to double check, before you invest your money. Hope that helps!

What is the deal with cell phones and cell phone company plans and services?
Q. I've been trying to do my homework, and unfortunately the cell phones that look really cool with the best features are not usable where I live. verizon seems to have the coolest, with T-mobile next. I can get an iphone here, but the others seem better. Unfortunately, no coverage here for either company. Why can't you just pick a phone you like and it work with a different company?

A. Looks aren't everything when it comes to phones; you need to look at functionality and whether or not the phone will do what you need it to. In regards to coverage the problem is that in order to avoid any wireless company from becoming a monopoly the FCC will not allow any carrier in the USA have coverage everywhere so all the carriers will have areas where they are stronger and weaker; the key is to look at who has the best coverage for the are you are in and where you will be using the phone then start looking at phones and rate plans. You can also do what many people have started doing which is to buy the phone they want unlocked to use on the carrier of their choice. The upside is greater variety but you will pay more for the… [cont.]

Do cell phone companies make phones that use a universal battery?
Q. I recently purchased a nice Motorrizr which i returned because it is 2 years old, and I dont want to be told that that particular battery is no longer made and you have to buy a new phone. You would think that they would make one battery that fits alot of phones so there is always a fresh supply of newly made batteries for those phones. It probably is a marketing strategy. Thanks for all info.

A. There is no such thing as a standardized battery for cell phones. Each model has a different form factor and each ahs different power requirements. You should be able to get a sweet deal on a new phone every two years without having it affect your bank balance too much. I would check out places like or or to get up to speed on what is out there on the market as far as current technology is concerned. Realistically, this type of technology is growing at a rapid pace and you will start to see that "2 year" window shrink to 6 months or less. Get with the times and get a new phone -- the days of keeping your cell phone for 6 years are over. LOL
