Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989) and the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975). Born in Tampico, Illinois, Reagan moved to Los Angeles, California in 1937. He began a career as an actor, first in films and later television, appearing in over fifty movie productions and gaining enough success to become a famous man. Some of his most notable roles are in Knute Rockne, All American and Kings Row. Reagan served as president of the Screen Actors Guild, and later spokesman for General Electric (GE); his start in politics occurred during his work for GE. Originally a member of the Democratic Party, he switched to the Republican Party in 1962. After delivering a rousing speech in support of Barry Goldwater's presidential candidacy in 1964, he was persuaded to seek the California governorship, winning two years later and again in 1970. He was defeated in his run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1968 as well as 1976, but won both the nomination and election in 1980. As president, Reagan implemented sweeping new political and economic initiatives. His supply-side economic policies, dubbed "Reaganomics", advocated controlling the money supply to reduce inflation, and spurring economic growth by reducing tax rates, government regulation of the economy, and certain types of government spending. In his first term he survived an assassination attempt, took a hard line against labor unions, and ordered military actions in Grenada. He was reelected in a landslide in 1984, proclaiming it was "Morning in America". His second term was primarily marked by foreign matters, such as the ending of the Cold War, the bombing of Libya, and the revelation of the Iran-Contra affair. Publicly describing the Soviet Union as an "evil empire", he supported anti-Communist movements worldwide and spent his first term forgoing the strategy of détente by ordering a massive military buildup in an arms race with the USSR. Reagan negotiated with Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev, culminating in the INF Treaty and the decrease of both countries' nuclear arsenals. Reagan left office in 1989. In 1994, the former president disclosed that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier in the year; he died ten years later at the age of 93. He ranks highly in public opinion polls of U.S. Presidents. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Many feel that Reagan was a primary cause for the demise of the middle class with his tax policies? Q. Rates were lowered for the richest Americans, rates on over 3 Million dropped from 70% to 34%. This shifted the balance of wealth upward and Bush continued these reckless policies. Should Reagan bear all the blame for the demise of the middle class or share this honor with W. Bush? Asked by The Shoe In Your Face - Sun Mar 29 12:11:05 2009 - - 18 Answers - 0 Comments A. It is the failure of free markets and Reaganomics that is driving up the prices of oil, food and just about everything else. Instead of making markets efficient, free market policies such as deregulation have made special interests richer and made the majority of people vulnerable to market manipulations by speculators and large corporations. The solution to reducing the price of gas and basic foodstuffs begins with educating the public about the failure of free market ideologies. As progressives, we need to show how Reaganomics and free markets have created the mess in which we now find ourselves. We can do this by pointing out how people spouting off the benefits of Reaganomics are responsible for higher gas prices, higher food prices,… [cont.] Answered by totalawarenessnow2 - Sun Mar 29 12:17:41 2009 Why did Ronald Reagan send money and guns to the Muslim terrorists in Afghanistan? Q. Apparently in the 80's Reagan gave a bunch of money and guns to the Islamic terrorists in Afghanistan and Pakistan. WTF? Why did he do something so stupid? Did he hate America? Was he 'tarded? Can someone explain the backstory behind this? Because, on the surface, it appears to be straight-up treason. Sending money and guns to the terrorists is treason. Asked by MEI_LIN GURRRL - Thu Mar 5 02:20:17 2009 - - 13 Answers - 0 Comments A. Russia invaded Afghanistan in Dec of 1979. And that war began Russia's own little Vietnam War. The United States in turn, began funding Afghan soldiers called the mujaheddin. Many people believe that the remnants of that group, later formed the base of the Al-Qaeda of today. Records show that the US contributed over 600 million dollars per year. Plus, the US generously supplied them with assault rifles and Stinger Missiles (surface to air antiaircraft weapon). The was all under the presidency of the top contributor of terror in the last forty years: Ronny Reagan. Now, the US is paying the price of Reagan's contribution to radical Islam. And radical Conservatives and Neocons try to hide the facts of what happens when you fail to look down… [cont.] Answered by They shoot moose, don't they - Thu Mar 5 02:48:23 2009 What is the German equivalent to a Reagan conservative?
