Slavery (also called thralldom) is a form of forced labour in which people are considered to be the property of others. Slaves can be held against their will from the time of their capture, purchase or birth, and deprived of the right to leave, to refuse to work, or to demand wages. In some societies it was legal for an owner to kill a slave; in others it was a crime.

Anti-Slavery International define slavery as "forced labour". By this definition, there are around around 27 million people and the society assert that there are more slaves in the world today than at any point in history, more than twice as many as all the African slaves brought to the Americas.

However, International Labour Organisation does not equate forced labour with slavery. According to ILO, there are estimated 12 million people around the world still work under coercion in forced labour, slavery and slavery-like practices.[3]

Most are debt slaves, largely in South Asia, who are under debt bondage incurred by lenders, sometimes even generations ago. Human trafficking is mostly for prostituting women and children into the sex trade and industry. It is described as "the largest slave trade in history" and is the fastest growing criminal industry, set to outgrow drug trafficking.

What economic factors made slavery so important in the 1850s?
Q. I know that the cotton productions needed a lot of slave labor, and the South needed these productions in order to have trades, but I am not able to find other economic factors that made slavery so important. Thanks! Also, another question: What social and political impact did slavery have on the Southern society in the 1850s? I know racism resulted from slavery. Thanks a lot!

A. I can't really speak to many of the economic factors that made slavery so important, other than to elaborate on yours. In the South (and even more so in the Caribbean), the warm climate allowed for larger, labor intensive crops to flourish. In the North, the colder climate facilitated industrial innovations that required pools of factory labor--i.e., it was cheaper to pay an hourly wage than to take care of slaves. Even before that, the types of farms in the North relied more on machinery than simple manual labor. On a side note--racism did not result from slavery. Racism resulted during the 18th and 19th century, when the concept of "races" emerged from taxonomic scientists. There was a belief that different human beings were… [cont.]

A. I have that movie! Its really good. Well, there are actually 2 of the same title. One is a Nigerian movie made in Nollywood of a white slave trader who falls in love with an African woman, but I guess you mean the English one thats just the true story of William Wilberforce, the man in English Parliament who fought to abolish the slave trade in England. Just watch it online. The first time I saw it was on Watchfreemovies.net Heres the trailer, there are some of the arguments given in the trailer... He mostly says that its morally wrong. He uses the African Author Olaudouh Equiano's authobiography (he's the African guy in the trailer) to show the bad & harsh treatment of Africans and the true side of what was going on in the slave… [cont.]

What does slavery, the holocaust, and abortion have in common?
Q. Whenever a society dehumanizes a particular group of people it breeds hate, injustice, and genocide. 1.) Slavery of Africans, a racial right, considered my "property". 2.) Holocaust of Jews, a religious right, considered "parasites". 3.) Killing of unborn babies, a reproductive right, considered my "body" thoughts?

Slavery is a form of forced labour in which people are held under the involuntary control of others, and required to work under legal penalty. Most notably, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, millions of people were taken from Africa to the Americas to work there.

  • Personally I believe the bicentenary offers us a chance not just to say how profoundly shameful the slave trade was – how we condemn its existence utterly and praise those who fought for its abolition, but also to express our deep sorrow that it ever happened, that it ever

could have happened and to rejoice at the different and better times we live in today.~ Tony Blair, in a statement to New Nation newspaper published on 27 November 2006.
