From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A state is a set of institutions that possess the authority to make the rules that govern the people in one or more societies, having internal and external sovereignty over a definite territory. In Max Weber's influential definition, it is that organization that has a "monopoly on the legitimate use of physical force within a given territory." It thus includes such institutions as the armed forces, civil service or state bureaucracy, courts, and police. Although the term often refers broadly to all institutions of government or rule—ancient and modern—the modern state system bears a number of characteristics that were first consolidated in western Europe, beginning in earnest in the 15th century, when the term "state" also acquired its current meaning. Thus the word is often used in a strict sense to refer only to modern political systems. Within a federal system, the term state also refers to political units, not sovereign themselves, but subject to the authority of the larger state, or federal union, such as the "states and territories of Australia" and the "states" in the United States. In casual usage, the terms "country," "nation," and "state" are often used as if they were synonymous; but in a more strict usage they can be distinguished:

Q. I used a surrogate in the state of Texas and am the managing conservator of the child. The surrogate now is battling for visitation (surrogate is biological mother). My daughter is 4 and knows nothing about this woman. I am willing to relocate to quash or delay this request and need to know what states would be best to relocate to. States that will give me the most rights and best limit visitation to the shortest time possible. I'm hoping the distance will be a factor in itself. Asked by Kay - Wed Oct 3 12:01:18 2007 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. Texas will likely be one of your best places to be. Depending on where you are in Texas, maybe you should just move to a more conservative area within Texas. Answered by labken1817 - Wed Oct 3 12:06:43 2007 How long do you have to live in a different state to pay in-state tuition? Q. I live in Pennsylvania. I'm a junior in high school and I would like to travel out of-state for college. However, out of-state tuition for public schools is more than it is for in-state schools. My question is, if I attended an out of-state school freshman year then got an apartment there for sophomore year-senior year, would I be able to pay in-state tuition? If not, then can anyone tell me how long I'd have to live in that state to pay in-state tuition? Thanks! Asked by Ms.Chanandler Bong - Sun Sep 14 14:10:27 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. As long as you moved to another state for the purpose of going to college, you will never be deemed an in state resident. Also as someone else stated, you can't be in school during the time you are using to gain residency. Lots of folks make the assumption as you do, that after a year or two they will be switched to in state. This is simply NOT the case. It's pretty much a "once an out of state resident, always an out of state resident". Also note there are many more things you would have to do than simply living there. The hardest for most kids is be 100% self supporting and working full time, new drivers licence, voter ID, library card, buy a house perhaps or sign a lease... re-tag your car, maintain your own insurance on your own… [cont.] Answered by Found-1 - Sun Sep 14 16:05:54 2008 What state makes a wife responsible for paying child support?
Q. Just got married and my new husband is paying child support for his son that lives in another state. If my husband does not make as much as he use to and that state will I be responsible for picking up the rest? Asked by 2born - Thu Dec 11 13:41:13 2008 - - 8 Answers - 0 Comments A. No state will make any person who isn't biological a parent, pay for someone else's child support HOWEVER, if you have a joint bank accounts and file jointly for taxes, the government can drain the account and take the joint return if your hubby defaults on his payments... Since his income has changed, he should request his case be reviewed to possibly lessen his payments, there no guarantee it will happen though Answered by Busy Mommy - Thu Dec 11 17:29:58 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "state" |
