Taiwan (台灣; historically 大灣 / 台員 / 大員 / 台圓 / 大圓 / 台窩灣), also known as Formosa (福爾摩沙; from Portuguese (Ilha) Formosa, meaning "beautiful (island)", is an island located in East Asia between the South China Sea and the East China Sea off the southeastern coast of mainland China. Since the end of the World War II in 1945, the island group has been under the government of the Republic of China.

Separated from the Asian continent by the 180-kilometre-wide Taiwan Strait, the main island of the group is 394 kilometres (245 mi) long and 144 kilometres (89 mi) wide. To its northeast are the main islands of Japan, and the southern end of the Ryukyu Islands of Japan is directly to the east; the Philippines lie to its south. It spans across the Tropic of Cancer and consists of steep mountains, covered by tropical and subtropical vegetation. Other minor islands and islets of the group include the Pescadores, Green Island, and Orchid Island among others; as well as the Diaoyutai Islands which are controlled by Japan since the 1970s and known as the Senkaku-shotō.

Since the end of the World War II in 1945, the island group has been governed by the Republic of China. The island group is, however, claimed by the People's Republic of China (PRC), which was established in 1949 on mainland China displacing the ROC and considers itself the successor state to the ROC with the exception of Mongolia. Since the 1970s, ROC itself (which has been located only in Taiwan) is commonly known as "Taiwan".

Taiwan's rapid economic growth in the decades after World War II has transformed it into an advanced economy as one of the Four Asian Tigers. This economic rise is known as the Taiwan Miracle. It is categorized as an advanced economy by the IMF and high-income economy by the World Bank. Its technology industry plays a key role in the global economy. Taiwanese companies manufacture a large proportion of the world's consumer electronics, although most of them are made in their factories in mainland China.

What is the salary of a physician in Taiwan?
Q. My cousin's thinking about going into the medical field after graduating from high school, and she's wondering what the prospects are for Taiwanese doctors in general. She has been completely born and bred and educated in Taiwan, and probably won't do any studying abroad. She'll most likely go to university in Taiwan. What is the average salary for a med student just out of Taiwanese med school who wants to work in Taiwan? Thanks!

A. Well! I could give it to you. This is the yahoo news from 2005. Due to the universal health plan, many of the doctors cannot survive with current salar :) (Yes. Sadly that is true.) normally, physicians salary is about six to eight times of others. But Med school costs a lot :) graduate med school students salary is about 80,000 NT per month. The max is 100,000 NT per month. average attending physician is about 300,000 NT annually. (That is about what my clients make per year.) but for the self-employed doctor, they may not survive. Their netprofit is 80,000 NT.

What city would be the best choice to go in Taiwan during the summer?
Q. I am traveling with friends to Taiwan this summer and I want to know which city would be the best choice. I also want to know which hotel is good. Thank you!

A. Since Taiwan s summer is very hot I would suggest you to go to Kenting to enjoy the beautiful beach. There are many water activities such as diving, surging, banana boating, sand volleyball, etc. If you want to stay in the hotel that has a nice beach view Howard Beach Resort ( would be the best choice. Even though it s more expensive I think it s worth it. Not just fun in the morning Kenting has fantastic nightlife. There are many nice restaurants, clubs and bars. Following link has detail information about what s good in Kenting and more hotel choices. You can also head north to Kaohsiung and go shipping in the Dream Mall which is the largest shopping center in Taiwan or go to Liouhe Night Market to enjoy the local Taiwanese dishes.… [cont.]

How would the US's relationship with China be different without Taiwan?
Q. I'm trying to come up with a thesis statement for a term paper. I have lots of research materials but haven't quite done all the reading yet. Mostly, I want some ideas on what I should be looking for or focusing on. So how would the USA's relationship with China differ if we abandoned Taiwan? How would Taiwan's relationship with the USA change? What should be done to resolve the Taiwan issue? Is there some connection that can be made between Taiwan and Tibet? Any other ideas, please feel free to post them here. Thanks!

A. Less influence over the factory owners/ trainers in China. To an extent. Probably less partnerships without the Taiwanese go-betweens. But thats already happening. Nobody wants or needs a middleman these days. Its already an inevitable effect for Taiwan. The monied elite would leave, mostly. The engineers, designers and doctors and nurses would leave, mostly. The country would be gutted, and all the infrastructure may likely be trashed by the owners on their way out if they cared enough--- BUT More likely many would come to an arrangement to sell their technical knowledge to the incoming liutenants, and be able to pay for their new house in Miami. China would recieve a large number of new mouths to feed who would NOT be grateful for… [cont.]
