The tongue is a muscle on the floor of the mouth that manipulates food for chewing and swallowing (deglutition). It is the primary organ of taste, as much of the upper surface of the tongue is covered in papillae and taste buds. A secondary function of the tongue is speech. It is sensitive and kept moist by saliva, and is richly supplied with nerves and blood vessels to help it move.

Description

Structure

Drawing of an anterior view of the tongue and oral cavity, with cheeks removed for clarity. Lateral view of the tongue, with extrinsic muscles highlighted.

The tongue is made mainly of skeletal muscle. The tongue extends much further than is commonly perceived, past the posterior border of the mouth and into the oropharynx.

The dorsum (upper surface) of the tongue can be divided into two parts:

  • an oral part (anterior two-thirds of the tongue) that lies mostly in the mouth
  • a pharyngeal part (posterior third of the tongue), which faces backward to the oropharynx

The two parts are separated by a V-shaped groove, which marks the terminal sulcus

Other divisions of the tongue are based on the area of the tongue:

How long should you keep a tongue piercing?
Q. I've had my tongue pierced for almost 6 years, and I seem to be unable to find any information online about how long you can safely keep a tongue piercing. I don't want to do any permenant damage to my tongue, but I've become very attached to it in all these years. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

How bad does your tongue swell after a piercing?
Q. I may get my tongue pierced tomorrow [hopefully] and know all of the procedures, safety tips, care issues etc but still I don't know how badly the swelling is [in most cases]. Is it like so bad you can't breathe? Or just that your tongue feels huge in your mouth? Thanks.

A. I have mine done. It doesn't swell that bad actually. It makes you have a little lisp but thats just about it. Don't worry its not like going to effect anything. Your tounge feels bigger than usually but thats it. After the swelling goes down your definiatly want to get a smaller barbell because it will hit your roof of your mouth. they give you a big on just because the swelling. I have had mine pierced for about 4 years now. Sometimes when I sleep with my mouth open, it swells around the ball but nothing big. Its normal to do that. Good luck. And don't worry... It don't hurt. I have 10 piercings!

How long does it take for a tongue ring piecercing to grow closed?
Q. I have had my tongue ring for about a year now, if not longer. On Saturday morning I took the bar out because of a blister underneath the ball. Now this morning when I tried to put it back it seems to have grown closed in the middle. I have left my tongue ring out for a lot longer than this. Why would it have grown closed?

A. When there is irritation or trauma in a pierced area, it is very likely that it will heal up quickly to try and fix the problem at hand. Also, I have known people with theirs pierced for years and took it out for a few hours and it closed, but everyone heals differently. I suggest that you do not force the jewelry in, but rather, let the area heal up completely and get it re-pierced if you wish.
